A head on shot of a lion is not always easy. At first it feels intimidating and then you realise they do not like making direct eye contact. The technique is to move at a tangent across the path of the lion and capture the moment he changes his glance from one side to another. If you look through the camera and the lion stares straight through you and out the back, it's time to leave!
